When I began my homeschooling journey with my children, I was very reluctant at first. I am a mother with a Master's Degree, so I initially felt that my time could be better spent on a job making money. But I am a mother above everything else, and my children's needs come first. God blessed me with All of my children, so I am responsible for them; for their well-being and their safety. The bible tells us to "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6).

I initially agreed to homeschool my kids because I was so upset with how the school system handled bullying issues and academic issues with my Autistic child. I also had a problem with the pace of the lessons and how it affected my children's ability to retain so much information so fast. Plus I was growing concerned that my children would be exposed to inaccurate (historical) lessons that did not tell the truth about U.S. History and I felt that what I was exposed to as a student caused me to feel inferior in many ways because of the historical lessons I had learned, and I didn't want that for them. I wanted my kid's academic experience to be filled with information that was accurate and relevant to who they are. I wanted my children to grow up feeling like they are equal to other students of different racial and ethnic backgrounds, and I especially wanted to introduce them to a level of biblical principles that will shape their moral character, that I felt was missing in the school system. I was also concerned about the many school shootings around the country and felt I wanted to protect them from becoming the victims of such acts. As a mother, I want to protect them from EVERYTHING. While I know logically that I can't, what I can do is ensure that they are exposed to the type of learning environment that is safe, productive, and free from harm or threats. They have their whole adult lives to deal with the troubles of the world. As children, they should have the chance to remain innocent and carefree for as long as possible. That's why I warmed to the idea of homeschool.

So, if you are like me, and you have questions or concerns about your child's academic experiences and you feel that there is a better way for them, I encourage you to consider the benefits of homeschool. I encourage you to take a more active approach in your child's academic career. While the road may start out a little bumpy, with a little discipline, time management, and structure, you can begin a journey of a lifetime, filled with limitless adventures.

God Bless
