Step-by-Step Instructions
for Setting up a
Homeschool for Your Child(ren)
Supplies needed:
-
A Desktop Computer or Laptop with Windows 10 compatibility (for each child)
-
Internet service of your choice
-
A quiet space for your child to work
- Headphones
- Writing Journal
- Scratch paper
- Pen or pencil
1. Set up a google account
This Google account is needed to set up a google classroom. Google Classroom can be used as an online database to set up daily or weekly instructions for your child that caters to your specific homeschooling structure. There are several ways to set up your special homeschool. There is no one set way to do it. Experiment with various methods and then decide which fits you and your child best.
2. Set up Your Classroom
Go to classroom.google.com to set up your child's classroom.
Again, feel free to set up your child's classroom however you wish. No one way is correct. Whichever way proves most effective for you to manage, that's the method you should choose.
3. Set up Your Gradebook and Attendance Tracker
Once you have set up your google classroom, you should also set up a free online grade book and attendance tracker. This will help you to manage grades and attendance, which is ESSENTIAL if you plan to homeschool your child throughout his or her high school career.
Gradebook Setup Instructions
To set up your grade book, simply input your child's information, your information, your child's grade level, and current classes. The grade book has features that will allow you to rollover your child's advancement from one year to the next. The system is set up to generate reports and transcripts which are needed to show an accurate account of your child's yearly progress if you ever wish to reenter your child into the school system. The transcripts can also be used to get your child into college.
You can either input assignments and grades (which is a more extensive process) or you can input final grades based on the grades generated monthly from the different sites you choose to use.
If you want your child to be on a structured schedule, you should set up a schedule for your child to follow. Again, arrange your child's schedule in a way that is conducive to your schedule, state requirements, and his or her abilities. For example, if your child needs more time to cover math and reading assignments than science or history, modify your schedule to reflect that need.
***Choose the Free Gradebook Option***
Alternative Attendance Tracker (Optional)
You can either choose to use the same Thinkwave system to track attendance or you can use other attendance tracker sites. Just remember to keep track of your child's attendance and grades.

4. Set up Educational Sites
Once you have set up your grade book and attendance tracker, begin visiting the different educational sites to set up accounts for each website. WARNING: If you use parental controls like family link, it may interfere with some sites like youtube, which may be needed during your child's instructional period. To avoid site blockages, set up each account MANUALLY without the help of google if you also use family link. *The sites are located at the bottom of this instructional.
5. Assign assignments to your student/child
After you have created your child's accounts begin assigning work to his or her classroom according to Grade Level. Feel free to challenge your child with more advanced work if you feel that he or she is ready for such a challenge. However, feel free to redirect your child towards lower-level assignments if you see that he or she is struggling at his or her current grade level. This is the BEAUTY of homeschooling. You get to witness first hand your child's areas of strength and weakness and can give them the time and space needed to learn at their own pace. Don't be afraid to admit to yourself if your child needs additional help or more time to complete an assignment. Each child learns at their own pace. Give your child the freedom to develop a love of learning by giving them the time they need to understand the many concepts that are available for them to learn.
6. Let your Child Begin the Learning Process!!
Have fun during this time!! Find new ways to learn and try to learn as much as you can because Learning is a limitless process we will continue to do for the rest of our lives.
